What began as a dispute at a digital service/Xerox centre in Darbe has evolved into a larger law-and-order and political controversy in Puttur, culminating in the ‘Puttur Chalo’ protest march on Monday, August 31.
Protest rally was organised by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jagarana Vedike, with protesters demanding action against those they allege were involved in the assault at the centre. The march began at Darbe Circle and proceeded towards the Mahalingeshwara Temple area, where a public meeting was held. Reports said thousands participated. The matter was not registered as a simple one-sided complaint. Puttur Town Police registered three cases following the confrontation, with complaints and allegations arising from the incident involving different parties.

Planned march was announced to begin at 11 a.m. from Darbe Circle, followed by a public meeting near the Mahalingeshwara Temple.
Five Demands Raised
- Register an attempt-to-murder case and take stringent action against those accused of assaulting Anjana.
- Take action against Niyaz and Naushad under the Goonda Act.
- Conduct a comprehensive investigation into the alleged role of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in the incident.
- Stop filing baseless cases against activists of social organisations.
- Ensure that the police conduct an impartial investigation without succumbing to political pressure.
6. Police prepared for a major mobilisation
Police treated the programme as a significant law-and-order exercise. Dakshina Kannada SP Arun K said conditional permission had been granted for the programme. Police conducted a route march in Puttur on Sunday as part of preparations.

- 139 police personnel

7. The complainant's family has expressed a different concern
An important development in the controversy came from the family of the complainant. Mubashira, sister of complainant Fathimath Miswana, reportedly expressed disappointment that the original incident had acquired a communal and political dimension. She said the family did not want the matter to become another political issue and indicated that they were not interested in pursuing it further in the manner in which the controversy had developed. This position is significant because it represents a perspective different from that of the organisations that subsequently mobilised around the incident.
