Vitla, August 10, 2026: A house at Kurumbala near Vitla was severely damaged after an LPG cylinder exploded on Sunday morning, destroying the kitchen and damaging parts of the house. Household articles, documents and furniture were also burnt in the incident.
The incident occurred at the house of A. Hameed when his wife, Khairunnisa, was working in the kitchen. Hameed had reportedly gone to the town at the time.
According to the family, a fire suddenly broke out near the regulator of the LPG cylinder. After hearing Khairunnisa raise an alarm, a neighbour, Umar, rushed to the house and helped move the occupants to safety.
A short while later, the cylinder exploded. The force of the explosion reportedly caused cracks in the walls, while the kitchen was extensively damaged. The cylinder was found severely damaged after the blast.
Police and other officials visited the house and collected information about the incident. Gas company officials also inspected the site. Revenue officials reportedly visited the spot as part of the preliminary assessment.
Police said the cylinders found at the house were domestic LPG cylinders and not commercial cylinders. Two cylinders were reportedly present at the house, with one in use and the other empty.
The condition of the exploded cylinder and the apparent disappearance of the regulator in the blast have raised questions that will require technical examination to establish the exact cause of the incident.
Earlier LPG incidents raise wider safety concerns
The Kurumbala explosion has also brought renewed attention to earlier LPG leakage and fire incidents reported in and around Vitla.
According to information provided by local residents, an LPG-related fire was reported at a house in Kuddapadavu on August 29, 2019, after gas reportedly leaked and accumulated inside the house. Household materials, including clothing, rice bags and plastic articles, were damaged.
Another incident was reported at a house in Darbe, Ukkuda, on July 30, 2020, where gas leakage reportedly resulted in a fire that damaged two rooms, electrical connections and household items. In January 2022, a resident of Chandalike, Vitla, reportedly suffered burns to both legs following another LPG-related incident.
Residents also claim that similar incidents have occurred in areas including Peruvai and other parts of the Vitla region. However, details and official findings relating to these earlier incidents need to be independently verified.
Local residents say that several of the reported incidents involved newly supplied LPG cylinders and are seeking a detailed examination of whether there is any common factor linking them.
Refilling allegations surface
The latest incident has also led to allegations concerning possible illegal LPG refilling in the area. There are claims that an earlier case involving alleged illegal refilling of LPG cylinders at a gas facility in the Bobbekeri area had been investigated following a raid. The circumstances and outcome of that case require verification from the concerned authorities before any conclusion can be drawn.
In the Kurumbala incident, an allegation has also reportedly been made that illegal refilling was taking place at the affected house. The allegation has not, however, been established.
The question of why such an allegation was made, particularly when both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders are reportedly available in the area, is among the issues that warrant clarification from the concerned agency and authorities.
Investigation needed
For now, the exact cause of Sunday's explosion remains to be established. A technical examination of the damaged cylinder, regulator, gas connection and other components could help determine whether the incident resulted from a cylinder defect, regulator or connection failure, gas leakage, improper handling, or another cause.
The wider concerns raised by residents also merit examination, particularly if records show multiple LPG-related incidents involving cylinders supplied through the same agency. Residents are seeking a transparent investigation and clarification on whether compensation was provided in earlier cases.
The incident has once again highlighted the safety concerns faced by families using LPG in rural areas, where elderly people or women may sometimes be alone at home during the day. A proper investigation, rather than speculation, is essential to establish the facts and determine whether any safety or supply-related failure contributed to the incident.
