Alva’s Medical College Gets 150 MBBS Seats; 54 for Tulu-Speaking Students

Moodbidri, 20 September 2026: Alva’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, popularly known as Alva’s Medical College, will be inaugurated on September 21.

College has received approval for 150 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year. Of these, 54 seats will be available for students from the Tulu-speaking minority community, said Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M. Mohan Alva.

He said the move will expand opportunities for Tulu-speaking students to pursue medical education. Medical college is part of the Alva’s Education Foundation’s expansion in the field of medical education.

Affordable Maternity Care Under ‘Madilu’

Dr Alva said the ‘Madilu’ scheme at Alva’s Health Centre provides maternity services at an affordable cost. Scheme also covers essential medical services, including surgeries related to the uterus. Initiative aims to make healthcare accessible to people from different sections of society.

Healthcare Through Public-Private Partnership

Under the Karnataka government’s public-private partnership model, Alva’s Health Centre has taken responsibility for the management of the Moodbidri Community Health Centre, Beluvai Primary Health Centre and Shaktinagar Primary Health Centre. These centres aim to provide quality, effective and people-friendly healthcare services.

Focus on Mental Health

Existing Alva’s Punarjanma Centre, which works towards creating a society free from addiction, has been upgraded into a 50-bed Alva’s Punarjanma Mental Health Hospital. Hospital provides multidisciplinary and comprehensive mental healthcare services. There are also plans to expand the hospital to a capacity of 200 beds in the future.

Focus on Compassionate Doctors

Dr Alva said medical education should not be limited to technical knowledge. The institution aims to develop doctors with humanity, compassion and a spirit of service towards patients and society. Students will also gain practical exposure through hospitals and community health centres. This direct experience in different medical specialties will complement their classroom education.

More Healthcare Facilities Planned

Several new healthcare facilities are planned in the next phase. These include a specialised care and treatment department for senior citizens, separate departments for dialysis and eye care, and a palliative care centre for bedridden patients. The existing Alva’s Punarjanma Centre will also be further upgraded.

Medical Departments Named After Senior Doctors

Several departments and treatment centres at the medical college have been named after senior doctors and medical personalities who made significant contributions to the field. Names include T.M.A. Pai, Dr S. Kanth, Dr Shankar Nayak, Dr V.S. Acharya, Dr Shantharam Shetty, Vinay Hegde, Dr Chandrashekar Shetty, Dr Sudhakar Shetty, Dr A.S. Kamath, Dr Manorama, Dr Krishnamurthy and Dr Amarnath Hegde.
