Theertha Amavasya: Over 5,000 Devotees Gather at Irde Bendr Theertha

Puttur, 12 September 2026: More than 5,000 devotees from different parts of the region took a holy dip at Irde Bendr Theertha on September 11 on the occasion of Theertha Amavasya during the Shravana monthIrde Bendr Theertha is known for its hot-water spring and is regarded as a significant pilgrimage spot in the region. The annual Theertha Snana attracted devotees from nearby villages as well as from other places.

Religious rituals began at around 4 a.m. with the assistance of the priests of the Sri Vishnumurthy Temple, Irde. Special prayers were offered at the sacred Theertha pond before devotees began the traditional ritual of taking a dip in the nearby Seere River followed by a bath at the sacred Theertha pond.

Two bathing ghats had been arranged at the Seere River to facilitate devotees. Offerings including fruits and Panchakajjaya were also made as part of the religious observance. The Theertha Snana continued until around 2.30 p.m.

Shaurya Disaster Management Team was deployed at the spot as part of the safety arrangements. Samarpana Seva Trust, Irde, sponsored refreshments for devotees, while Shivaji Yuva Sene (Regd.), Bendr Theertha Irde, took overall responsibility for organising the event. Personnel from the Puttur Rural Police Station were also present.

Organisers said the number of devotees increased significantly this year following extensive promotion of the event through social media since last year. Several public figures and community leaders participated in the programme, including Hindu leader Arun Kumar Puthila, former MLA Sanjeeva Matandur, Hindu leader Muralikrishna Hasanthadka, Block Congress president Krishnaprasad Alva Chelyadka, Manoj Kumar Ajjikallu, Vishnumurthy Temple Management Committee president Vitthal Rai Balyottu and Prakash Rai Bailadi.

Shivaji Yuva Sene president Dhanraj said the coordinated efforts of volunteers, with responsibilities assigned to different teams, contributed to the successful conduct of the event. He said the organisation aims to further develop Bendr Theertha as part of its 10th anniversary initiative, with the objective of making it not only a centre of religious faith but also an attractive pilgrimage and tourism destination for devotees from across the region.
