Puttur, 4 September 2026: As part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR-2026) of electoral rolls in Karnataka, 19 additional Assistant Electoral Registration Officers have been appointed for the Puttur Assembly constituency to facilitate verification of voter records and streamline the revision process.

Appointments have been made to ensure that voters whose names have not been mapped with the 2002 electoral roll, or whose name and address details show discrepancies, can have their records verified at the local level.

12,332 Voters Receive Notices

Draft electoral roll was published on August 24. In Puttur Assembly constituency, 12,332 voters have been identified as either not mapped with the 2002 electoral roll or having discrepancies in their names and addresses. Process of issuing notices to these voters has already begun.

Voters who receive notices have been asked to appear at the date and location mentioned in the notice with the required documents. The Tahsildar's office has appealed to voters to cooperate with the verification process so that eligible names can be retained in the electoral roll.

Local-Level Verification

Newly appointed additional officers will examine documents submitted by voters during the SIR verification process, particularly in cases involving anomalies or non-mapping with the 2002 electoral roll. They will also examine the prescribed documents submitted by voters in response to notices and determine their eligibility in accordance with Election Commission guidelines.

Arrangement is intended to reduce the need for voters to travel to distant offices for verification. Between five and 15 assistant officers are available within the jurisdiction of each Electoral Registration Officer.

Who Has Been Appointed?

19 officers have been assigned to different local bodies and departments covering the Puttur Assembly constituency. They include officials from:

  • Vitla Town Panchayat
  • Gram Panchayats in the Vitla, Puttur and surrounding areas
  • Mangaluru Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM)
  • Zilla Panchayat Engineering Department
  • Public Works Department
  • Taluk Panchayat
  • Education Department
  • Fisheries Department
  • Social Welfare Department
  • Horticulture Department
  • PACS and other government departments

Appointments include Chief Officer Karunakara for Vitla Town Panchayat; Assistant Executive Engineer Subrahmanya Prasad for Ididu-Hakkur and Kedila Gram Panchayats; MESCOM Assistant Executive Engineer Shivashankar for Perne, Alike and Peruvai; and officials including Jagruthi K.M., Rajesh Rai, Naveen Bhandari H., Shobha S.S., D. Suresh, Krishnamurthy and Shabreenath, among others. Officers have already undergone training and are now involved in the disposal of claims and objections following publication of the draft electoral roll.

For voters who have received an SIR notice, the immediate step is to check the date and venue mentioned in the notice and attend the verification with the required supporting documents. Local-level verification mechanism is intended to make the process more accessible while ensuring that discrepancies and non-mapping cases are examined before the final electoral roll is prepared.
