Mangaluru, 2 October 2026: International athlete M.R. Poovamma was warmly welcomed at Mangaluru International Airport on Thursday evening by Akshith Suvarna, president of the Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular).
Suvarna presented Poovamma with a bouquet and congratulated her for her achievements in athletics at the international level. He also appreciated her dedication, hard work and contribution to Indian sport.
According to Suvarna, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has expressed his support for Poovamma's sporting achievements and conveyed his best wishes to her.
Call for Financial Recognition
Suvarna urged the Karnataka government to provide appropriate financial recognition and support to Poovamma in view of her achievements representing the country at the international level.
He said athletes devote significant time and effort to training and competition while striving to bring recognition to the country. According to him, athletes who achieve at the national and international levels should receive not only appreciation but also appropriate financial assistance, encouragement and facilities.
Suvarna said such support could encourage young athletes to pursue sporting careers and work towards achieving higher levels of performance.
He urged the State Government to consider Poovamma's achievements and announce suitable financial recognition, saying that government support and recognition are important for athletes.
Youth Leaders Attend
Airport reception was attended by Mangaluru South constituency president Sattar Bandar and youth office-bearers Adarsh Poojary, Nishanth, Sushanth and Vineeth, among others.
