A traditional jeweller who played a key role in the growth of Muliya Gold & Diamonds, Shyama Bhat built a reputation for integrity, leadership and lasting customer relationships.

Some business names become part of a town's commercial history. They are remembered not merely for the businesses they built, but for the trust they earned and the relationships they developed over decades.

Muliya Shyama Bhat was one such name in Puttur. A prominent figure in the traditional jewellery trade, Shyama Bhat played an important role in the growth of Muliya Gold & Diamonds, carrying forward a family business that had its beginnings in Puttur in 1944. His journey reflected a generation of entrepreneurs for whom business was built on personal relationships, honesty and reputation.

Carrying forward a family business

The roots of the Muliya jewellery business go back to 1944, when Shyama Bhat's father, Muliya Keshava Bhatta, established Muliya Jewels on Court Road in Puttur. Jewellery trade of that era was built largely on personal trust. Customers looked for jewellers they could rely on, particularly when purchasing gold for weddings, family occasions and long-term savings. After his father's passing, Shyama Bhat took over the responsibility of the business.

It was a responsibility that went beyond managing a commercial establishment. He had to protect a reputation built by the previous generation while guiding the business through a changing economic and social environment.

Building a name through trust

Shyama Bhat's leadership helped the business grow in popularity over the years. Known for his integrity and efficient leadership, he worked to strengthen the relationship between the business and its customers. Under his stewardship, the jewellery establishment developed into a trusted destination for a large number of customers in Puttur and surrounding areas.

For a traditional jewellery business, customer confidence is one of its most valuable assets. A gold purchase is often associated with important moments in a family's life. The relationship between a customer and jeweller can therefore continue for decades sometimes across generations. Shyama Bhat understood the importance of that relationship and helped make customer trust a defining feature of the business.

A bridge between two generations

One of Shyama Bhat's important contributions was his role in taking the family enterprise from one generation to the next. As age-related responsibilities increased, he eventually handed over the leadership of the business to his sons, Keshava Prasad and Krishna Narayana.

The transition marked a new phase in the journey of the family enterprise. For Shyama Bhat, handing over the business was not simply a change in management. It was the passing on of an institution that had been built over decades along with its reputation, relationships and values. His generation had established the foundation. The next generation would take the business forward in a changing jewellery market.

A businessman with a strong social commitment

Shyama Bhat's contribution to Puttur was not limited to the business world. He was also actively involved in the social and community life of the town, serving in leadership positions in several organisations. He served as the President of the Rotary Club in 1982–83 and later as the President of Puttur Lions Club in 1987–88.

He was also associated with organisations including Ramakrishna Seva Samaj, Puttur Merchants' Association and Puttur Jewellers' Association, serving in leadership roles and contributing to their activities. His involvement in these organisations reflected a broader understanding of the role of a businessman in society. For Shyama Bhat, professional success and social responsibility went hand in hand.

Contribution to Puttur's public life

His public engagement extended to several community initiatives. Shyama Bhat was actively associated with the Birumale Hill Development Committee, which worked towards the development of the important local landmark.

He also served as the Chairman of the Reception Committee for a Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Puttur. These responsibilities placed him at the intersection of business, civic activity and community life. They also reflected the confidence placed in him by different sections of Puttur's society.

A representative of Puttur's traditional business culture

Shyama Bhat's life and work offer a glimpse into an important period in Puttur's commercial history. It was a time when local businesses were often closely connected with their owners and families. A handshake, a personal relationship and a reputation built over years could be as important as formal business systems.

That culture has changed considerably with the growth of organised retail, technology and new consumer expectations. Yet one principle has remained relevant: trust is the foundation of a lasting business. Shyama Bhat's career was built around that principle.

A legacy measured in relationships

Gold and diamonds are valuable commodities, but for a jewellery business, reputation can be even more valuable. Gold has a market price. A business's reputation is earned over time. Shyama Bhat's contribution to the Muliya jewellery journey can therefore be understood not merely in terms of business growth, but through the relationships he built with customers, colleagues, fellow entrepreneurs and the wider community. He inherited a business established by his father, strengthened its presence in Puttur, and eventually entrusted its future to the next generation. At the same time, he remained connected with the social and civic life of the town.

‘Your Memories Will Always Be Our Guiding Light’: Family Remembers Shyama Bhat

For the family of Muliya Shyama Bhat, his legacy goes far beyond the business and social responsibilities he carried during his lifetime. Remembering him, the family said his guidance, inspiring words and cherished memories would continue to remain a part of their lives.

At every step of our lives, your guidance, inspiring words and cherished memories will always remain with us. Your precious memories will continue to protect us and light our path through life. We pray that the divine soul who has left us may be blessed with eternal peace and a noble onward journey by the grace of Sri Devaru.

In a heartfelt tribute, his sons Keshava Prasad Muliya and Krishna Narayana Muliya, daughter Dr. Vidyasraswati, and other family members remembered him with affection. For the family, the memories of Shyama Bhat remain closely linked not only to his role as a businessman, but also to the guidance, values and inspiration he shared with those around him.

For Puttur, his story is therefore more than the story of a jeweller. It is the story of an entrepreneur who built through trust, a leader who served through institutions, and a member of a generation that helped shape the town's commercial culture.

That is the legacy of Muliya Shyama Bhat - a legacy built not only in gold and jewellery, but in trust, relationships and service.
