Panchamrita is one of the traditional offerings prepared during Hindu worship. The word Panchamrita means a sacred combination of five ingredients - milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. Each ingredient is traditionally associated with a particular quality or spiritual benefit. This article explains the meaning of Panchamrita and the traditional significance of its five ingredients in simple terms.

The word Panchamrita comes from two Sanskrit words:

Pancha — five
Amrita — nectar

It is traditionally prepared using five substances: Milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. These five ingredients are considered auspicious in traditional worship.

Five Ingredients of Panchamrita

1. Ksheera - means milk. According to the traditional teaching, milk is Shuddhiprada, meaning it is associated with purity or purification.

2. Dadhi - means curd or yoghurt. It is traditionally described as Balavardhana, meaning it is associated with increasing strength.

3. Ghrita - means ghee or clarified butter. Traditional verse describes ghee as Buddhiprada, meaning it is associated with the enhancement of intellect or wisdom.

4. Madhu - means honey. According to the traditional teaching, honey is associated with Roganivarana, or the removal of illness. This should be understood as a traditional religious belief, not as a medical claim or replacement for medical treatment.

5. Sharkara - means sugar. It is traditionally described as Shantida, meaning it is associated with peace and calmness.
