Puttur, 26 September 2026: Anganwadi workers and helpers in Puttur taluk have decided to join the one-day strike planned by the Dakshina Kannada District Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association on September 28.
Decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Puttur Taluk Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association held at Nellikkatte Anganwadi under the leadership of association president Kamala. District association has planned the strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Dakshina Kannada, demanding the fulfilment of various demands concerning anganwadi workers and helpers.
Honorarium pending since August
According to the association, anganwadi workers and helpers have not received their honorarium since August. Members expressed concern that workers who have been serving in anganwadis since their establishment in 1975 continue to work under an honorarium-based system.
They said anganwadi workers play an important role in implementing various government schemes and delivering services to the community. Association members said the current honorarium is difficult to manage amid rising living costs. They also said several workers and helpers have taken bank loans and are facing difficulties in making repayments. Members demanded better financial support and improved working conditions for anganwadi workers and helpers.
All Puttur anganwadi centres to remain closed
Meeting decided that all anganwadi centres in Puttur taluk would remain closed on September 28 and that the workers and helpers would participate in the district-level strike.
Dakshina Kannada district association president Tara Ballal provided information about the proposed strike and the demands being raised by the organisation. Former district president Aruna D. Beeri, former Puttur association presidents Mallika Alva and Sulochana, secretary Shailaja, joint secretary Jayanti, treasurer Chandrika, and representatives from various areas along with anganwadi workers attended the meeting.
Jayanti welcomed the gathering, while Chandrika proposed the vote of thanks.
