Gokarna, 12 September 2026: Excessively hot or cold water should not be consumed, as sudden changes in temperature can adversely affect the body, said Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Mahaswamiji of Sri Ramachandrapura Math.
Speaking at a religious gathering held as part of the ‘Annabrahma Chaturmasya’ programme at the Math’s Moola Math premises in Ashoke, Gokarna, on September 12, the seer spoke about water in the ‘Annam Brahma’ discourse series.
He said Ayurveda advises against consuming water that is excessively cold or hot. The body should adapt to changes in temperature gradually rather than being exposed to sudden extremes, he explained.
Warning Against Excessively Cold Water
Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji said people have increasingly developed the habit of drinking chilled water directly from refrigerators because it provides immediate relief, especially in hot weather.
According to Ayurvedic principles, he said, excessively cold water may be difficult to digest, weaken Jatharagni (digestive fire), and aggravate Vata and Kapha. He added that modern scientific perspectives also raise concerns about the body's response to extreme cold, including blood-vessel constriction. He advised people to follow healthy water-drinking practices suited to their needs and the prevailing season.
Ayurveda’s Guidance on Water
Swamiji also spoke about traditional methods of preparing and cooling boiled water according to seasonal requirements. He referred to Ayurvedic descriptions of different methods of cooling water and the practice of adding certain flowers to water for fragrance.
He further suggested using suitable vessels such as gold, silver, copper, glass or earthenware for storing or consuming water, while expressing reservations about the use of steel tumblers in this context.
Public Figures Attend Programme
