Hindu worship is practised in different forms, with traditions varying in their scriptures, rituals and methods of devotion. According to Vedamurthy Manjulagiri Venkataramana Bhatta, deity worship can broadly be understood through four principal traditions; they are Vedic, Tantric, Puranic and Popular (Laukika) worship. Each tradition has its own emphasis, while elements of all four can also come together in the worship of a deity.
1. Vedic Worship: Rooted in the Vedas
Vaidikopasana, or Vedic worship, gives primary importance to the Vedic mantras.
In this approach, worship is centred on the recitation and application of mantras from the Vedas. Vedic chants and prescribed practices form the principal basis of the worship.
2. Tantric Worship: Mantra, Yantra and Ritual Practice
Tantrikopasana, or Tantric worship, is primarily based on Tantra and Agama traditions.
This form of worship can involve several ritual elements, including mantra, yantra, nyasa and mudra. Emphasis is therefore not limited to verbal prayer but includes prescribed ritual procedures and symbolic practices associated with the particular deity and tradition.
3. Puranic Worship: Based on Sacred Narratives
Pauranikopasana, or Puranic worship, gives importance to the Puranas and Itihasas.
Stories, teachings and traditions found in Hindu sacred literature form an important part of this approach. Devotion to a deity may be expressed through listening to or reciting sacred narratives, observing festivals and following practices associated with the deity's traditions.
4. Popular Worship: Simple and Devotional
Laukikopasana, or popular worship, represents a simpler form of devotional practice.
It can include everyday prayer, devotional worship, chanting the names of deities, bhajans and other accessible forms of devotion. This form of worship is often practised as part of daily family and community life without requiring elaborate ritual procedures.
Four Forms Can Come Together
An important point in the traditional explanation is that these four forms are not necessarily mutually exclusive. According to Śāstra, individuals may follow an appropriate form of worship according to their tradition, understanding and preference. At the same time, elements of Vedic, Tantric, Puranic and Laukika practices can come together in the worship of the same deity.
For example, a single religious observance may include Vedic mantras, prescribed ritual procedures, references to Puranic traditions and simple devotional practices such as bhajans.
Four Paths, One Devotional Purpose
Classification highlights the diversity within Hindu worship traditions. While the methods, texts and rituals may differ, devotees may adopt practices according to their family tradition, spiritual inclination and circumstances.
Four-fold classification Vedic, Tantric, Puranic and Laukika. Therefore, offers a way of understanding the different approaches through which deity worship is practised. Explanation is presented as a traditional religious framework, rather than as a single prescribed method that every devotee must follow.
